Gabin Rivoire IndieLisboa 2022 • IndieMusic Belgium, United Kingdom, Documentary, 2021, 90′ Laurent Garnier is described as being the Pope or “a DJ’s DJ”. This documentary offers an insight into the long career of the French DJ and producer, one of the biggest names in the techno music explosion of the 90s. A walk through dance floors so full of people dancing that it rains with the condensation resulting from the heat. MirapolisRemixes by Rone, released 05 October 2018 1. This has been quite some time in coming. This documentary was obviously mainly filmed pre-covid so this may be a difficult watch if you are in any way pining for the dancefloor, filled with people close enough to touch. It seems a very long time ago that clubbing as it was ever happened, the question is will it ever return? This is a fairly straight forward documentary about one of the pioneers of not just techno but dance music, as well as being one of the worlds best DJ's the current trend in techno is the female model/ex-model/could be a model Instagram influencer, real techno fans know where the real talent is. And unfortunately for the social media platforms, these are basically 50 years plus men with greying hair or bald. The point is their looks aren't their selling many music documentaries this is highly engaging and will be for people who have no idea who LG is. This isn't just fan service. What is striking about this documentary is the obsessive love of music that this man has, it is also what he went through in order to fulfil his career as a DJ, producer and event planner. There are many high profile DJs but its very unlikely they will have a history that compares. His emotion when he plays as well as that of crowd is captured is also essential viewing for anyone interested in the history of dance music who isn't from France, simply because the UK and US stories of dance music tend to over shadow the French story. It needed to be has very high production values, however there are one or two issues I would raise is that the Blessed Madonna who appears was previously named the Black Madonna and was forced into a name change for obvious reasons. The late-ish release of this documentary should have meant the credits reflected this name other aspect is the argument for dance music to be political. I disagree. The fact is that dance music blew away the politics from clubs, certainly in the UK. So the argument made that it should be political tends to come from people who didn't experience political or other types of violence in nightlife ie the young, which dance music other issue is that the people who make this argument tend to be left wing, they want to mobilise dance music fans into their causes. Which is what happened when the right tried to take over the skinhead movement in the UK. It leads to nothing but conflict, the thing is once you make it political, the politicians turn up and both sides turn up. You cant/wont have a left wing without a right. We are seeing this already across Europe and its leading to the closing of its a great documentary but one of the messages is definitely questionable, keep politics out of dance music!

For the FNAC label, Garnier released "French Connection" and the Bout de Souffle EP; after the label went under, though, he formed the F Communications label with Eric Morand a friend who had also worked for FNAC. Gabin Rivoire’s documentary “Laurent Garnier Off the Record,” which explores the origins and rise of techno music through the eyes of one of its pioneers, is set to world premiere on May 7 in front of a live audience at the CPHDOX festival in Copenhagen. Anton, which is handling world sales, has released its first official trailer exclusively to Variety. Garnier, one of the world’s leading DJs and a well-respected music producer, talks to Variety from his home in France, which is still in lockdown, preventing him from traveling to the premiere, about how the film evolved, his love of techno, and how the pandemic caused him to stop listening to techno music for the first time in more than 30 had been approached a few times by people wanting to make a documentary about his life, but wanted to “open the doors and work in trust” with a filmmaker, he says. “Laurent Garnier Off the Record” is to a certain extent the result of a collaboration between Garnier and Rivoire, initiated by the DJ, although he underscores the point that it is told from the director’s perspective, not from Variety'Do Not Split' Backer Fritt Ord Boosts Norwegian Docs with Global Appeal EXCLUSIVEFilm About International Peace Mediators Up Next for Director of 'Behind the Headlines' EXCLUSIVE'Tiny Tim King for a Day' Producer Momento Film Ramps up Fiction Slate EXCLUSIVEThe two men got to know each other nine years ago when Rivoire shot a film about YEAH!, a music festival in Southern France that Garnier co-organizes. Rivoire knew very little about techno, Garnier says, but the DJ liked his approach to capturing music on film in “a very detached way,” which Garnier describes as “beautiful very hard to film passion,” he says. “And when I saw Gabin’s work, I thought he will be able to bring it. Because passion is the one thing that really – since a very young age – has driven me to do what I do. I’m very passionate about music and quite serious about a few years of working together, Garnier suggested that they team up together on a documentary project. So, over the next year and a half, Rivoire followed Garnier as he toured the world DJing at 2003, Garnier had published a book “Electrochoc,” “telling the story of house and techno music, linked with my story, but going quite deep into disco [as well as earlier forms of dance music],” Garnier says. A French production company was keen to produce a fiction film based on the book, but after several years of development the project failed to move forward. About three years ago, when the French producer attached to the narrative film passed on the idea of a separate documentary, Garnier took both projects to producer Julien Loeffler at London-based Featuristic Films “Knuckledust,” “Say Your Prayers,” “The Sonata”, who came on board, but with the proviso that the documentary would go first. The film is produced in association with Agent Garnier set off on his 2018/2019 world tour, Rivoire traveled with him, taking in performances in front of 15,000 people at Sónar Festival in Barcelona, Bassiani, a mecca for techno in Tbilisi, Republic of Georgia, and crowded clubs in Tokyo. Rivoire also filmed interviews with other dance music pioneers, such as Carl Cox, Pedro Winter, Seth Troxler, Jeff Mills and Derrick the film, the tour footage and interviews are interspersed with archival footage that provides a flashback to the late ’80s, when the techno scene was emerging in Detroit and England, in clubs like Manchester’s Hacienda, where Garnier started his DJing journey, and then Rex, a club in Paris, where Garnier moved to next. The film also includes the political and judicial response to rave culture, which in some countries was met with police brutality. There was a hostile reception to techno in France, for example, where it was viewed as a “threat,” Garnier says. “We’re not where we are today without a Finally, the film takes us to 2017, when Garnier celebrated the 30th anniversary of his first appearance as a resident DJ at Rex, and when he received the Legion of Honor medal from French politician Jack Lang. Garnier’s views on the events and the music overlay the archival about his relationship with Rivoire, Garnier says he’s “extremely happy” with how they worked together, and the documentary that came out of that collaboration. “We really became quite close. We spent like four years on the road together. And then when he started to edit the documentary, he really got me very involved with the process, which I thought was really I am very happy now with the result, because we have my story, but then within that we have Gabin’s style. We have everything I like about what he does in a longer film than what he ever did for us before. Like every project I do, I get very, very involved with it, because I do things with my heart, and we tried to do good were two things he emphasized with Rivoire when the director was writing the script. These were “We need to feel the passion. We need to understand that it’s all about the community. It’s all about sharing things, because I’m not an artist who works on his power of the techno community showed itself after the film’s producers started a Kickstarter crowd-funding campaign in France, which delivered a third of the movie’s shutdown has been hard for everyone but particularly difficult for Garnier to endure, after 30 years on the road with his music. It has been “extremely destabilizing,” he says. “I was missing very much seeing people, sharing things with But, on the plus side, it has also reinforced his awareness of what his life as a DJ has given him. “This is my fuel. You know, this is what I need. I don’t do drugs. I don’t drink very much. But the shot of adrenaline I get and the pleasure I get from sharing music with people is extremely strong,” he always said and really thought this – it’s not bullshit – that I was a very lucky guy. Because I’ve lived through an amazing musical revolution. Techno for me was the essence of everything I loved,” he says, citing his boundary crossing love of a swathe of musical genres – including jazz, disco, soul, reggae and New Wave – and techno seemed to embrace all those disparate influences. He also feels lucky that his career has lasted so long, and he can still draw massive crowds to his given his love of techno, there was one surprising side-effect of the pandemic for the DJ during the first shutdown. “For six months – for the first time in 30 years – I could not listen to techno anymore. Because for me, techno was always the music that was looking at the future. It’s always been a very futuristic music; always looking forward,” he says. “When everything stopped – because we did not have any idea of where all this was going – for the first time in my life, I kind of had a wall in front of me. And techno was not relevant anymore, and I stopped listening to Instead he’s been listening to a lot of old French songs, funk, soul and a lot of psychedelic. “I actually produced an album with a psychedelic band during the first lockdown,” he with the vaccine rollout and with some people talking to him about dates for gigs in a few months or so, he has returned to techno. “Now that we have a light at the end of the tunnel, I’ve been able to re-embrace techno and re-listen to techno. It’s very strange, but that was like almost a physical thing,” he experience chimes with his view of the DJing art. “Music has always been a question of what suits the surroundings and the moment and the place. As a DJ, I’ve always said it’s playing the right record at the right time. You can do anything when you are DJing, but not anytime. You have to read the right moment to play anything. You can play records at five in the morning, where if you would have played them three hours before you would have got killed,” he this is what’s interesting within DJing – it’s finding the right moment where you can hit people hard and they can go home and remember the night because of the records you played at that time, because it became says that when he starts DJing again, for the first few months, there will be some tracks he won’t play. He compares it to the choice of films he wants to see when the movie theaters reopen in France. “You know what? I’d like to dream a bit. And I’d like to laugh a bit. And I’d like to hope. If they program something really dark… fuck it, I won’t come. Because I don’t need that,” he says. “And I think music-wise, it will be the same. I receive tons of promos and the guys who are making really hard techno, I don’t understand it at the moment, because for me, it so doesn’t fit the adds “So, you know, perhaps my first gigs, I might be influenced by my mood, and how I feel, and I think I’ll be so happy to be able to share music of VarietyEverything Coming to Netflix in May 2021What's Coming to Disney Plus in May 2021The Most Anticipated Movies Coming in 2021Sign up for Variety’s Newsletter. Comingoff the somewhat distressing news of big studio Warner Brothers announcement of Zac Efron led EDM film, We Are Your Friends, news of a feature film based on DJ, producer and label owner Laurent Garnier’s 2003 ELECTROCHOC book has emerged to instil some order in the dance music underground. “As a DJ and someone who loves to dance, I have

Synopsis A look into the life of Laurent Garnier, one of the godfathers of house music, from his emergence on the music scene in the 80's to now. The story of the last music revolution through the eyes of a pioneer. Cast Crew Details Genres Cast Director Producer Studio Country Languages Genres Popular reviews More A surprisingly touching documentary which appears to have the legendary French house DJ as its subject but actually is about house as a network of fellow DJs, musicians, organizers, dancers, chemicals and spaces. In this way, the talking heads become part of the total story instead of some guys telling you how amazing Garnier is. Maybe I'm getting too old for this shit but I was moved by a lot of images, Donna Summer singing 'I Feel Love', the built-up of 'Acid Trax', the girl with the hat totally losing it to the music. The only thing I missed is a technical explanation of why Garnier is so good, and what sets him apart from other DJs. Has to be seen in the cinema for full impact. i think watching this as part of manchester international festival with a fat sound system favoured my score but i do feel like this gave such a rich history of techno all over the world and i very much loved. made me miss the club though <\3 Too in the middle between a documentary about Laurent garnier and house/techno. Soundtrack was obviously good Great documentary about an amazing individual and his place in the unstoppable ascend of house music. Acid house documentaries are my fave genre A bombastic French tale of an ugly duckling striving to become a little prince. All the Kickstarter budget was generously spent on close-ups of Monsieur Garnier and his more famous and significant counterparts, diluted with home videos and a small share of the narcotic chronicle of the 90s club scene formation — a truly important and interesting topic sacrificed and dishonestly silenced in this ninety-minute narcissism. Took me right back to being in many dark, damp, loud, and crowded rooms with him playing, back in the “90s. Amazing times, amazing man. A must-see for anyone who was clubbing in the 90s. Een docu waar je energie van krijgt deze review schreef ik in de eerste 10 minuten maar ironisch genoeg sliep ik het laatste halfuur. Lag niet aan de film Why did I think it would be a good idea to watch a documentary about techno music, full of scenes from packed clubs and festivals? I almost forgot I still miss this. Of course the best thing is the soundtrack, what did you expect? Second best is the message behind this, a story of electronic music told by the eyes of an historical figure, not a documentation of reality, a story from the eyes and it works well at showing that. It's also a great deal between the need of the directors to show off the situation in a cool, direct and appealing way and the need to show the intimate side of a person, there's both, and it works just enough to get things some kind of need in this to get political but it kinda leaves the reality out of the thing, so it's good to live in this magical world of Laurent Garnier and write names in Helvetica and have fun at parties. Documentario su una leggenda che ha ispirato movimento rivoluzionario. Vederlo in questo periodo di chiusura lascia l'amaro in bocca
